Mohr Stories – Tales from the mound
The Mohr Stories Podcast has been more fun than I have ever imagined it could be. I want to share with you some behind the scenes stuff. Many funny and interesting things happen after the mics get turned off. I’m not sure where to start so I’ll pick a show at random. The podcast, “Tales from the mound” with Orioles pitcher Jeremy Guthrie was more fun than I had expected. Athletes can be a tough interview. Not my man J.G. Jeremy Guthrie has the unfortunate distinction of being the losing-est pitcher in baseball…twice. It’s too bad because he isn’t what you would call a “bad” pitcher. There are at least two dozen pitchers in the major leagues that give up more runs per game than JEremy. He pitches for a team that simply doesn’t score runs for him. After the mics were off, my friend Matt and I started teasing Guthrie about his number. He wears #46. Last year, former Orioles’ pitcher Mike Flanagan tragically comitted suicide. Mike Flanagan used to wear number 46 too.Me and my buddy started to test the level of athlete superstition that lived inside Guthrie. We told him, “That’s a dead guy’s number your wearing man. You are never going to have a winning record if you go out there with a dead guy’s number!” Jeremy started to blow us off but we smelled blood and kept at it. “The baseball Gods don’t like when you go out there with a dead guy’s number man. That’s bad mojo.” Guthrie started to get a little freaked out. He asked us, “WHat am I supposed to do?” We asked him, “What’s your favorite number?” He responded, “Fifteen” We told him that no one on the Orioles wears number fifteen and if he really wanted to start winning games he should switch to number fifteen. He agreed. We were stunned. We didn’t think our ball breaking would result in anything but now we had a major leaguer telling us he was going to change hhis number. We took a bible out of the hotel drawer (Mormon, thankfully, J.G. is a huge mormon.) and we made JEremy swear that he would change his number for the 2012 baseball season. He swore on the bible and to my understanding and subsequent conversations with him, he is changing his number. Jeremy Guthrie will wear #15 next year. All because me and one of my friends broke his balls about wearing a dead guy’s number
That’s CRAZY Awesome! (I miss that word… and Rad! God bless the 80′s!)
What up Jay. Never posted anything on a blog before, hope this is the correct place. I’ve recently started listening to your podcast (after hearing you plug it on The Jime Rome Show) and wanted to leave some positive feedback for you. I’ve been a long-time Carolla Podcast listener but I find your episodes are a very refreshing change, and I look forward to Thursdays because of them. It’s nice that they are commercial free. My wife and I will do our part and come see you at Harrah’s in February. Keep up the great work, and thank you!
Really enjoyed the Guthrie podcast. Seems like a good dude, even with the whole boy band thing going on.
